Emmett Crane
movie projectionist, and Mr. Static on Friday nights · 1970s
Emmett Crane is a character. The stories are ours.
Emmett ran the projector at the Ohmsville Bijou on weeknights, and on Friday nights he was Mr. Static, the man in the cape who introduced the creature feature on Channel 9 from a set made of two coffins and a fog machine. The fog machine was a kettle. Everybody in town knew it was Emmett and everybody pretended they did not, which is the whole arrangement. His first kit came into his life as set dressing — one sat open on that Channel 9 set because the lid looked like a control panel and the camera liked it — and it stopped being a prop the night somebody wired it up and it went off on air. He is low, slow and enjoying himself far too much, and when the picture cuts to the board he goes quiet and lets the circuit do the scaring.
